2020 Census participation is important for funding, statistics and representation
In a few short months, the 2020 Census form will be available to complete. You will be able to respond online, by phone and by mail. Everyone living in the United States is required to participate.
So why is your participation in the census so important? Census data is used to distribute more than $685 billion in federal funding among states to support local community programs for roads, schools, education and health care, etc. Census data are also used to determine equitable federal government representation for states. In addition, census statistics are used by businesses and other organizations, such as public relations agencies, to make important decisions that influence everything from marketing to job creation.
By law, personal information provided remains confidential and secure. Educating and encouraging others to participate in the 2020 census will lead to higher participation that will more accurately reflect our growing population, ensuring that we receive more adequate funding for important community programs and services.
Pima Association of Governments, the region’s metropolitan planning organization, is leading a 2020 Census regional awareness campaign. For more information and to view PAG’s 2020 Census toolkit, please visit www.PAGregion.com/census. Additional information is available at www.2020census.gov, where the 2020 Census forms will be available starting in mid-March. Census workers only conduct follow up visits to households that have not completed the form. Forms should be completed by April 1, 2020.
